Educational Program in Dance

S.P.A.C.E offers a variety of residencies that focus on learning the skills of dance. Residencies provide an introduction to creative movement, choreography, aesthetic education, dance history, dance styles and techniques and/or criticism. S.P.A.C.E offers schools the opportunity to send an artist (faculty member) to present an S.P.A.C.E program in all school assembly format, workshop or in a classroom session. Students learn to develop their own movement and how to tell a story through dance. From that, they create their own dance work to full production. The content of the work is developed with classroom teachers to enhance the academic curriculum. Students also learn about other aspects of mounting a dance production, such as developing costumes, props, choosing music, stage management, etc. Students may also view a performance of the S.P.A.C.E's lecture/demonstration program. All residencies include the following components: .

  1. Dance in the classroom workshops for students or part of the faculty, facilitated by a teaching artist.
  2. Performance of the S.P.A.C.E's lecture/demonstration program "Connecting to Dance"
  3. In-school performance of the Stars of Dance Chicago, Kids Program, featuring some of Chicago's most distinguished dance artists.
  4. Tours and/or field trips to a dance performance during Dance Chicago 2008 engagement at the Athenaeum Theater as below:
